First
day of period and a sudden flash of traumatic memories are combo attackers for
such a beautiful day, yes it’s still happening right now while I’m writing
this. So, instead of turning my pillow wet, I decide to wash my face, grab my
laptop, and write something.
When
I’m unhappy, I will listen to sad songs that suit my feeling. That would make
me easier to cry and feel relief afterwards. The other day, when there’s no
chance to listen to songs, I would write poems based on my mind's situation, sometimes I
write stories. But if my thoughts get built up too high already, I will find a
friend to share my feelings with. As far as I’m concerned, I’m still helped by
these methods whenever my mental break down gets in my way.

How
about you? What do you do when you’re feeling blue?
Talking
about sad songs for accompanying our bad day, I will recommend some of them for
you to hear as well, perhaps these would help you to cope with your dark hours
when your evil twin—your negative thoughts or so-called your ‘demon’—consumes
your happiness.
1. Ocean – Seafret.
This
song is about longing for someone that once very close to you (or could be someone
that you want to be close with forever), but they’re unreachable. You love and
miss them so much but something keeps you from expressing it. You’re crumbling
into pieces but they don’t know about it, they never do and never will.
“It feels like there’s ocean, between
you and me.”
2. Cigarette Daydreams – Cage The
Elephant.
Do
you ever feel like you’re emotionally unstable? You got problems and to solve
them seems really hard. Each and every single sight around seems so blurry, but
no one’s by your side leading you the way to feel okay again. Well, if
that happens to you, let Matt Shultz sings this song to you and be there with
you.
“You can drive all night, looking for
the answer in the pouring rain.”
3. Please, Please, Please Let Me Get What
I Want – The Smiths.
This
song is a good friend for us in our desperate times, when we have been waiting
for so long to get something we really want in life, but we haven’t even see
the chance to see that. It can be anything.
“Let me get what I want, Lord knows it
would be the first time.”
4. Hotel Room – Richard Hawley.
Listening
to this song makes you feel like there’s this Richard Hawley beside you,
singing to you with his open arms, ready to hug you while you’re sobbing. I
guess this song is pretty calming with its melodies and with Hawley’s soothing
voice.
“…but I’ve got you here with me
friend, cause you’re here in my arms.”
5. Rehat – Kunto Aji.
Through
this song, Mas Kun has successfully saved us from blaming ourselves too much
for our unfortunate events we experienced in the past. He tells us that there
will always be light and hopes. Life hits us badly sometimes and just let it
be. It’s not your fault when things don’t go as you expect. Matter fact is,
regretting the past and worrying about the future prevent us from living the present
peacefully. I love this song so much.
“Jangan berhenti, yang kau takutkan
takkan terjadi.”
6. Sulung – Kunto Aji // Bungsu – Kunto Aji.
Mantra-Mantra
Album by Kunto Aji is specially devoted for us overthinker. Overthinking is a
root for sadness and anxiety, in my opinion. Once we dwell in it, moving out
will be so hard. Well, this album contains nine perfectly relaxing songs. These
two songs are about allowing things to happen and about having courage to let go
things that aren’t meant to be with us. Maybe both songs have its own different
purpose, but in my interpretation, that’s that.
“Yang seharusnya kau jaga adalah dirimu sendiri.”
7. Happiness – Rex Orange County.
This song is really sad. It’s
about loving someone so much and you want them to love you and your
imperfections. No more words needed to explain how beautiful this song is. Rex
is a genius. I only mention one, but to be honest there’s a lot more sad songs
of Rex. Especially on his new album: PONY. Girl, get a damn piece of tissue.
“...but will you still love me when
nobody wants me around?”
8. I Started A Joke – Bee Gees.
One
day, I asked this one question to one of my closest person in life and it
turned out to be one of the most traumatic events in my life. I felt like I’ve
said something that is horribly forbidden. As a kid, I happened to be a puppet
doll for one of my closest person in life (again), I was told to do something,
but I was too afraid to do it and I thought it wasn’t gonna be a big deal, but out
from nowhere, it became a doom. I was blamed for a really big problem a family
could ever dealt. These two traumatic events still haunt me until now, until I’m
about to turn 20. This song resonates well to this experience.
“I started a joke which started the
whole world crying, but I didn’t see that the joke was on me.”
9. One Of Us – ABBA.
Point
of view of this song is a woman who’s currently trapped in loneliness after losing
somebody she used to love. But for some reasons I interpret this song as though
it’s about a lonely girl that has done nothing right—her romantic relationship
is messed up, her sleeping schedule is messed up, etc—because she suffers psychologically.
(Whatever, Indi).
"Sorry for herself feeling stupid feeling small, wishing she had never left at all."
10. Talking To The Moon – Bruno Mars.
I
love this song, who doesn’t? I’ve actually known this song since I was 11. This
song is about falling in love with people we can’t have (seriously it’s just me
and my random interpretation), instead, we talk to the moon every night, and
yeah, still hoping. Ayo, dude, I’m still hopin’ over here. Jk.
“In hopes you’re on the other side
talking to me too, or am I a fool?”
11. Yesterday – The Beatles.
Honestly The Beatles has a
lot of cry along songs. My favorite one is Something, written by George. It’s a
sad song but in a positive way. And here it is, also my all-time favorite. Yesterday,
everything was fine. But today isn’t.
“Yesterday, all my problems seem so
far away, now it looks as though they’re here to stay.”
12. Fake Optics – Ardhito Pramono.
Your life is a mess, yet no
one else to address. It’s because everyone is being fake, or maybe it’s just
you wearing too much masks. Life is hard that you have to act here and there
differently.
“But then I realized that my life's been such a mess. It's only just you and me, friend."
13. Creep – Radiohead.
Yeah,
this song is me every time. I have this strange reaction, that is whenever I
like somebody, I will constantly ask myself: “Do I and my messed up life deserve
you?” “Don’t you think I’m ugly?” “Other girls are way prettier than me but why
do you like me?” And a lot more. Sounds so insecure and unhealthy, right? I
know, and I need to stop thinking that way. I was bullied for my appearance
back in the day, but that shouldn’t affect the way I respond to people who
admire me for who I am, or for their idea about me. I’m learning to control it now. Wish me luck.
“What the hell am I doing here? I don’t
belong here.”
14. Piledriver Waltz – Alex Turner.
I
finally mentioned my husband’s song (sorry for making you sick lol). This song
is pretty hard to interpret because the lyric is sugarcoated (na mean?1).
It’s like, you have a crush, but your crush doesn’t seem okay (suffers
heartbreak, maybe, or maybe not), and they hurted you. (again, na mean?). I LOVE
singing along with this song.
“I heard the news that you’re planning
to shoot me out of a cannon, I heard the piledriver waltz, it woke me up this
morning.”
15. Shouldn’t End This Way – Reality Club.
Who’s
agreed that this is one of the saddest song of Reality Club? In my opinion,
this song tells us about a couple that (for some serious reasons) has to be on
their own for a while. Yep, they still crave to be together but they have to go their own way,
and of course it ain’t easy for them. It shouldn’t end that way.
“I have to leave for a while, but I couldn’t
tell you. Maybe it’s for the better, but someday I’m going back to you.”
Oh
and I got another one: Hesitation. By the way I haven’t listened to all of
their songs on the second album, but so far, GOSH THEY'RE ALL DOPE WHAT DO YOU THINK?! I like The Rush so much. It's a rare gem.
***
That’s
a wrap for today. I know I haven’t mentioned the rest of my favorite sad songs
(there’s a lot… lot more). Sorry if I interpret some of them terribly wrong in
your perspective. There might or might not be vol. 2 of this post, but I don’t
know, we’ll see. Hope it helps! Cheerio.
Oh
and hey, I need more sad songs from you guys. Please comment your top three! I’ll
be happy if you share yours. Sending love to you all. Xoxo.
1.
“Na mean?” is a slang word. It means “Do you know what I mean?” I know, it’s
oversimplified. But it’s cool.
